Ralph E. MacKay collection, 1898-1973.

The Ralph E. MacKay Collection consists primarily of historical images of Alaska and the Yukon. Subjects include the Klondike gold rush and life in Dawson, Yukon; gold mining on the Seward Peninsula, Alaska; copper mining in Alaska's Copper River Region and Prince William Sound, including the Kennecott mines, Ellamar, and Latouche; the Copper River and Northwestern Railway; and early views of Fairbanks, Cordova, Valdez, Nome, and other Alaskan communities. Also found in the collection are letters written by Lewis A. Levensaler to MacKay in the period 1955-1973, in which Levensaler tells of his Alaskan experiences prospecting for copper in the 1900s-1930s and provides identifying information for some of the photographs.
